The moon pulls and I am drawn towards it. My mind lives on the moon. The moon is at the heart of this story. Both familiar and unknowable, the moon is ethereal. The printer translates images of the moon into the molten glass. The artwork asks to be orbited. I make the moon out of glass, I also make glass out of the moon.
I developed a new way of programming the printer for this piece. I wrote an algorithm that takes a gray scale image and translates the gray value as a number. That number is translated into a speed. When the printer moves faster the glass forms a thinner wall. When it moves slower it instead forms a thicker wall. For this work gray values become instructions to the printer about speed and the result is different thicknesses of glass.
